Frontierland has been part of Disneyland since day one, July 17, 1955, one of the five original lands. It’s built around the promise of the American West in the 1800s, riverboats, stagecoaches, gold rush towns, and it’s home to some of the most enduring attractions anywhere in the park.
Rides and Attractions
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Best for: families with kids ready for a real, if moderate, thrill.
A runaway mine train coaster through a haunted gold mine, opened back in 1979 and still one of the most beloved rides in the park. Height requirement is 40 inches, and it’s included with Lightning Lane. Worth knowing there’s no single rider line here, and guests using wheelchairs need to transfer to board.
Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island
Best for: kids who want to actually explore rather than just ride something.
A pirate-themed reimagining of the classic Tom Sawyer Island, accessible by raft across the Rivers of America. Caves, treasure-hunting details, and genuinely great for letting kids roam and climb at their own pace rather than standing in line.
Mark Twain Riverboat
Best for: a relaxing, scenic break from the rest of the park.
A 19th-century-style steam-powered paddleboat that circles the Rivers of America, genuinely one of the calmer, more atmospheric attractions in Frontierland.
Sailing Ship Columbia
Best for: history buffs and anyone who wants a different kind of ride than the paddleboat next door.
A full-scale, 84-foot-tall replica of the Columbia Rediviva, the first American ship to circumnavigate the globe, complete with three masts and ten guns. It shares its dock, called Frontier Landing, with the Mark Twain Riverboat, and boarding involves some genuinely steep steps up onto the deck. The narrated, roughly 12-minute cruise passes three different lands along the Rivers of America, Frontierland, New Orleans Square, and Bayou Country, giving you a view of Chick-A-Pin Hill from the water. It also plays a role in Fantasmic! each night, so if you’re curious what that ship does after dark, that’s your answer.

Frontierland is one of the resort’s marquee nighttime show locations, staged right on the Rivers of America, with the Sailing Ship Columbia itself part of the spectacle after dark.

The Golden Horseshoe (quick service, mobile order available)
Old West saloon setting with live entertainment (“Showdown at the Golden Horseshoe” runs several times daily). Menu leans casual: chicken tenders, fish and chips, a sampler box with hot honey tenders and corn dogs, plus ice cream floats. Best seating is gazebo-style, close to the stage.
Stage Door Café (quick service, no mobile order)
Tiny counter-service spot tucked behind the Golden Horseshoe, shares outdoor seating with River Belle Terrace. Small menu, all classics: hand-dipped corn dogs, fish and chips, chicken breast nuggets. The real draw is the house-made funnel cake, often the seasonal flavor spot to check each visit.

Roaming Characters
Woody and Jessie from Toy Story frequently make appearances near the Sailing Ship Columbia’s dock. Check the Disneyland app for current times and location, since character rotations shift day to day.
