What Soarin’ Across America Means for Your Trip
If you’re reading this on the day it goes out, you’ve got perfect timing: Soarin’ Over California flew its final run at Disney California Adventure on June 30, 2026, and starting July 2, the theater reopens with an entirely new film — Soarin’ Across America.
We have to admit, we’ve got a soft spot for the California version that’s hard to fully let go of. It’s only around for part of the year to begin with — Soarin’ Over California comes and goes as a limited-time overlay in the same theater that usually runs Soarin’ Around the World, so getting a Golden State flight at all has always felt a little bit like catching it while you can. This most recent run actually returned back on February 6, 2026, just ahead of DCA’s own 25th anniversary on February 8, and it stuck around far longer than a typical seasonal window before finally wrapping up June 30. Soarin’ Around the World is a lot of fun in its own right too — hang gliding past the Great Wall, the Alps, the Pyramids, Sydney Harbour — so we’ve genuinely enjoyed both versions of this attraction depending on which one happens to be flying when we visit. All that said, we’re genuinely excited to see what Across America looks like in person.
What’s Different
Soarin’ Across America swaps out the California-only footage for more than a dozen locations across the entire country — the rugged New England coastline, New York Harbor, the vast stretch of Grand Canyon West, autumn color across the heartland, southern bayous, the northern wilderness, and sunlit island shores, among others. It was filmed as part of Disney’s company-wide “Disney Celebrates America” initiative tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary, and it debuts right alongside the July 4th weekend, when Disneyland and Walt Disney World are both leaning hard into anniversary programming, including a special evening fireworks broadcast from both resorts as part of a larger multi-platform celebration.
The score is new too — composer Bruce Broughton built a new arrangement using Jerry Goldsmith’s original Soarin’ themes, so longtime fans should still hear some familiar musical DNA even with all-new visuals. Walt Disney Imagineering reportedly used helicopters, heavy-lift drones, and a huge amount of specialized camera equipment to capture the more than a dozen locations featured in the new film — this wasn’t a quick reshoot, it was a genuine cross-country production.
What’s Staying the Same
- The ride mechanics haven’t changed. You’re still lifted into the air in front of the giant projection dome, still get the wind and scent effects, still get that same swooping sensation.
- The theater itself is unchanged — no new queue overlay has been announced for Disneyland the way EPCOT’s version got a National Geographic trivia experience built into its queue.
- It’s a same-day swap. Disney confirmed there’s no extended downtime between versions — Soarin’ Over California ran through June 30, and Soarin’ Across America opens the very next operating day.
- The Walt Disney World version has already been flying since May 26, so if you’ve got friends or family who’ve visited EPCOT recently, they may already have a preview of what Disneyland guests are about to experience for the first time.
Why This Is a Good Excuse to Ride It Again
New attraction overlays always create a short window of elevated interest, and that usually means longer standby waits than the ride normally pulls, especially stacked on top of already-busy July 4th week crowds. If you’re headed to DCA in the next few weeks, here’s how we’d handle it:
- Rope drop it if it’s on your priority list. The first hour after opening will have the shortest wait you’ll see for weeks.
- Use Lightning Lane Multi Pass if standby is climbing fast. Soarin’ consistently books up quickly during any kind of ride refresh — don’t wait until midday to grab a return window.
- Don’t skip it if you’ve “already seen Soarin’.” This is functionally a new experience, not a minor refresh, so even repeat visitors are getting a genuinely different eight minutes in the air.
- If you’re a Soarin’ Over California purist, we get it — every ride refresh means saying goodbye to something familiar, even a version that was never meant to be permanent to begin with. But this one comes with real craft and a real occasion behind it, and it’s tied to a 250th-anniversary moment that won’t come around again.
Whether you’re flying out of DCA for the first time or the fiftieth, it’s worth carving out room on your next itinerary. Just build in a little extra wait-time cushion while the new version is fresh — and if you happen to catch Soarin’ Over California or Soarin’ Around the World on a future trip when one of them rotates back in, consider yourself lucky. None of these versions seem to be sticking around forever.
