Tucked inside the same fall season as Halloween Time is a celebration that has nothing to do with villains, candy, or spooky decor. Plaza de la Familia is Disney California Adventure’s dedicated tribute to Día de los Muertos, and it’s one of the more genuinely moving experiences Disney has built into its seasonal calendar, inspired by Pixar’s Coco and rooted in real cultural tradition rather than Halloween-adjacent theming.
When and where
Plaza de la Familia runs August 21 through November 2, 2026, at Paradise Gardens Park inside Disney California Adventure. Notice the dates don’t match Halloween Time exactly. Halloween Time itself closes out on October 31, but Plaza de la Familia runs two extra days beyond that, through November 2, which lines up with the actual Día de los Muertos observance dates of November 1 and 2 on the traditional calendar. That’s a small detail, but it signals something about how deliberately this event was built. It isn’t a Halloween tie-in with a re-skinned name. It’s its own thing, running on its own calendar.
What’s actually there
“The Storytellers of Plaza de la Familia Celebrate the Musical World of Coco!” is the centerpiece, a live street show featuring a traveling troupe of Folklórico dancers, mariachi singers, and musicians performing songs from Coco, “Remember Me” and “The World Es Mi Familia” among them, alongside traditional Mexican folk music including “La Llorona.” This runs several times daily, with showtimes posted in the Disneyland app.
Live mariachi music plays regularly at the Paradise Garden Bandstand, giving the whole area a different sonic identity than the rest of the park, worth building time into your day just to sit and listen rather than treating it as a walk-through.
Miguel appears as a hand-animated, dimensional figure, roaming with his guitar from late morning through evening depending on the day. This is a meet-and-greet format Disney doesn’t use often, and it’s worth seeking out specifically if your family loves Coco.
The Recuérdame mural offers a photo-op tied directly to the film, and the memory wall lets guests add a note of remembrance for loved ones, a genuinely personal touch that sets this event apart from anything else at the resort. This isn’t a photo backdrop. It’s an invitation to participate in the tradition, not just observe it.
The Árbol de la Vida (Tree of Life), a vibrant marigold arch, and striking calaca (skeleton) statues fill out Paradise Gardens Park with the visual identity of the celebration, bright colors and traditional Día de los Muertos iconography rather than Halloween’s darker palette.
Paradise Garden Grill runs a specialty seasonal menu built around Mexican cuisine for the duration of the event, including the returning Chilaquiles Carnitas Torta, red chilaquiles, refried beans, avocado spread, queso fresco, pickled red onions, and a fried egg, served with chips. This is a genuine food destination within the event, not an afterthought snack cart.
The Disneyland Park companion piece
Plaza de la Familia lives at DCA, but Disneyland Park gets its own smaller tribute. A vibrant installation near Rancho del Zocalo Restaurante in Frontierland features catrinas and calacas (decorative skeleton figurines), colorful marigolds, and other décor items traditionally displayed on ofrendas, home altars honoring the deceased. It’s a compact display, not a full event space, but it means guests spending their whole day at Disneyland Park still get a taste of the tradition without needing to park-hop to DCA.
Why this matters for your trip planning
If you’re building a Halloween Time itinerary and treating Plaza de la Familia as a five-minute walk-through on your way to something else, you’re underselling it. This is a cultural celebration with real depth, live performance, food, and a genuinely reflective element in the memory wall, and it rewards actually stopping rather than passing through.
A few planning notes:
Budget real time for it. The Storytellers show runs multiple times daily, but catching it means checking the Disneyland app for specific showtimes rather than hoping to stumble into it. Treat it like any other must-see entertainment, plan around the schedule.
Go earlier in the run if you want a quieter experience. Because Plaza de la Familia opens the same day as Halloween Time, August 21, and runs through November 2, the late-August and early-September window tends to be less crowded across the whole resort. If a more contemplative, less rushed version of the experience matters to you, that’s the window to target.
Pair it with a Frontierland stop at Disneyland Park. Since the Rancho del Zocalo installation lives in Frontierland, you can build a natural day that touches both tributes without excessive backtracking, DCA in the morning for Plaza de la Familia and the Storytellers show, Disneyland Park in the afternoon for the Frontierland display and the rest of Halloween Time.
Don’t skip it because you’re “doing Halloween.” Plaza de la Familia and Halloween Time run concurrently, but they’re not the same celebration, and treating them as interchangeable means missing out on something Disney built with genuine care and cultural specificity. If your family connects with Coco, or if Día de los Muertos has personal meaning, this is worth being the priority of your day, not a stop along the way to something else.
Disney California Adventure doesn’t always get credit for the emotional range it’s capable of. Plaza de la Familia is a good reminder that the resort can do quiet, meaningful, and specific just as well as it does spectacle.
